Photographer Jade Beall’s beautiful picture of mothers breastfeeding their babies has caused controversy on Facebook this week and depressingly, has been branded “disgusting” by some.
When Jade posted the image to her Facebook page it had thousands of likes and shares within hours, however she also received a flood of negative comments and messages from people, requesting that she remove the image.
Talking to Cosmopolitan, she said: “I received many private messages (all from men) telling me I should remove the photo, though I’d posted the image with nipples and genital areas blurred (because I have had images removed before by Facebook where a woman’s nipple was shown). Then someone noticed I had missed blurring one nipple and the photo was again reported and finally removed.”
“When we see a woman with the untypical body type feeling empowered and vulnerable to pose for an artist, it’s like somehow I break the rules of what is acceptable for how much skin a woman ‘should’ show,” the photographer continued. “And to show her allowing her breasts to be used in a completely un-sexualized manner, that really rocks the boat.”
“I love seeing a room full of diverse bodies feeding their babies, the very bodies that made and gave life to the babies!” she said.
When so many hyper-sexualised images of women are splashed across social media everyday without a murmur of disapproval, it seems ridiculous that a photo of women doing something entirely natural can cause such a stir.
